Loading & starting a game
01Why isn’t the game responding to my keyboard?
Click once inside the game, then try the controls again. Browsers send keys to whichever part of the page has focus, so clicking the toolbar, another window, or the address bar can move control away from the game.
02Why did the controls stop working after I changed tabs or clicked outside the game?
Return to the game tab and click or tap inside the player. Retro-Arcade normally restores focus automatically, but your browser or operating system may require a fresh interaction after switching away.
03Why does a direction or action remain stuck after the game loses focus?
Release all keys, click inside the game, and press the stuck direction or action once. If it continues, briefly open the emulator menu and resume, or reload the page. Retro-Arcade clears held inputs when focus changes, but an interrupted key release can occasionally be missed by a browser.
04How do I insert a coin and start a one-player game?
On a keyboard, press V to insert a coin and Enter to start. On a phone or tablet, tap COIN and then START. Some games show an information or warning screen first; follow its on-screen prompt before inserting a coin.
05Where can I find the controls for the current game?
Desktop controls are listed directly below the player. On touch devices, the game displays a directional pad plus the action buttons needed for that title. You can also open the emulator’s gamepad or control settings menu.

06Can I change or rebind the keyboard controls?
Yes. Open the emulator menu, choose Control Settings, select a control, and press the replacement key. Avoid browser shortcuts such as F5, Ctrl+W, or Cmd+W.
07Why is there no sound when the game starts?
Click or tap inside the player first; browsers commonly block audio until you interact with the page. Also check the emulator volume, the tab’s mute setting, your device volume, and any silent-mode or Bluetooth audio connection. Reload the game after changing those settings.
08Why is the game stuck on a loading screen, blank screen, or black screen?
Wait a moment for the game and emulator to download, then reload once. Disable aggressive content blockers for Retro-Arcade and make sure JavaScript, cookies, and browser storage are allowed. If only one title fails while others work, please report the game name.
09Why is the game taking a long time to download or start?
The emulator and game files load before play begins, and the first visit is usually the slowest. Use a stable Wi-Fi or wired connection, stop other large downloads, and keep the tab open. A reload may help if the progress has not changed for a minute.
10Which desktop and mobile browsers work best with Retro-Arcade?
Use a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. Chrome or Edge generally provides the most consistent desktop experience, while Safari is the usual choice on iPhone and iPad. Private browsing and heavily restricted in-app browsers may prevent storage, audio, or fullscreen features from working normally.
11Why is the game slow, choppy, or producing crackling audio?
Close other demanding tabs and apps, connect your device to power, and turn off battery-saver mode. Try leaving fullscreen if the device is struggling, or reload the game. Older phones and low-power computers may not run every arcade core at full speed.
12How do I enter or exit fullscreen mode?
Use the fullscreen button in the emulator toolbar. On desktop, Esc normally exits fullscreen. On mobile, you may need to tap the screen to reveal the toolbar; some iPhone browser modes limit true fullscreen.
13What should I do if fullscreen causes the game to stop responding?
Click or tap the game once after entering or leaving fullscreen. If controls still do not respond, exit fullscreen, switch away from the tab and back, then click the player again.
14Can I use a USB or Bluetooth game controller?
Most modern controllers supported by your browser can work. Connect or pair the controller before loading the game, press a button so the browser detects it, then check the emulator’s control settings. Controller support varies by browser, device, and controller model.

15Why are the touchscreen controls missing on my phone or tablet?
Tap inside the player and wait for the game to finish starting. If the controls are still hidden, tap the gamepad icon in the emulator toolbar. Reloading after rotating the device can also restore the touch layout.
16How do I restore touchscreen controls after accidentally hiding them?
Tap the gamepad icon in the emulator toolbar to toggle the virtual controller back on. Tap the game once afterward if the buttons appear but do not respond.
17Why are the touchscreen buttons covering part of the game?
The controls overlay the game so the play area can stay as large as possible. Rotate to landscape and enter fullscreen for more room. You can also use the gamepad icon to hide the controls temporarily when reading a game screen.
18Should I play in portrait or landscape orientation on my phone?
Landscape is recommended. It gives the game, directional pad, and action buttons more space and is usually more comfortable in fullscreen. Portrait still works when you cannot rotate the device.
19Why do taps, swipes, browser gestures, or the phone keyboard interfere with gameplay?
Start each gesture on a visible game control rather than near a screen edge, where the operating system may reserve navigation gestures. Close any open text field or browser menu, use fullscreen when available, and avoid playing inside an embedded social-media browser.

20Will my progress, high scores, control settings, or saved games be retained if I reload or leave the page?
Do not assume arcade progress or high scores will be saved automatically. Emulator settings and any manually created save states may be kept in this browser’s local storage, but they are tied to this device and browser and can be erased by private browsing, clearing site data, or browser cleanup. Create a save state from the emulator menu when the game supports it.
