Why this site exists
Arcade games were designed for brief encounters: a glowing cabinet, a handful of controls, and a rule set learned one lost life at a time. That immediacy is easy to preserve badly. A ROM name or database row may record that a game existed, but it does not explain how it felt to approach the cabinet or why players kept returning.
Retro-Arcade brings playable cabinets together with original history, practical controls, technical explanations, live collection statistics, ranked challenges, and articles about arcade design. The aim is to help a new player get started quickly while giving returning players useful context beyond nostalgia.
How the collection is prepared
The catalogue records a game's identity, controls, artwork reference, and access tier separately from its storage availability. An available game has a configured asset and permits access for the current visitor or account tier; that label is not a certification of complete compatibility. A catalogue entry may remain visible when it is unavailable.
Compatibility varies because original arcade boards used many different control layouts and hardware assumptions. Where touch controls are a poor fit, the cabinet page says that a keyboard is the better choice. Player votes and support reports help identify entries that need another review.
Editorial approach
Our guides distinguish documented facts, worked examples, and editorial suggestions. Sources are linked where readers need to verify a claim. Original explanatory diagrams are labelled, and a proposed practice exercise is not presented as a tested run. Articles show their publication date, author, and a later update date when applicable. Site announcements are labelled as site updates.
External imports arrive as drafts. Featured-guide and advertising eligibility require an additional editorial review of facts, original value, image permissions, and rendered layout. Publication alone does not qualify an article for either placement. Corrections remain welcome after review.
Arcade records are often incomplete or contradictory, especially for licensed boards, regional sets, bootlegs, and prototype releases. We prefer a clear correction over false certainty. If you find an inaccurate date, credit, control, description, or technical claim, please send the page address and the evidence through the contact page.
How Retro-Arcade is funded
Running the site involves hosting, storage, security, and development costs. Optional Supporter access helps pay those costs and unlocks more of the prepared collection. Retro-Arcade is also applying to use Google AdSense on selected original editorial pages. Advertising is kept away from game launch screens, account pages, checkout, and other places where it could distract from a task or be mistaken for a site control.
Commercial relationships do not determine editorial conclusions. If a page contains paid promotion or an affiliate relationship in the future, it will be labelled clearly and kept secondary to the page’s own content.
